As the 2019-2020 school year winds down in the midst of the Coronavrius Pandemic, Coach Guttery has been busy preparing for next season. The ECS basketball varsity team has a busy month of June ahead of them with 3 team shootouts (Lehigh Summer Slam, Summer Shootout, FABC Showcase) as well as a team retreat to a beach-front house on the other coast of Florida. ECS basketball players will also be assisting as camp counselors for the largest basketball skill development camp in SWFL. Over 300 campers will participate in this year's Summer Shootout Clinic's, which will be held in the Sentinel Fieldhouse.
The 2019-2020 season was one of ups and downs. The team played the toughest schedule in school history and finished with a record of 15-14. For the first time in school history, the boys hoops team got wins over Bishop Verot and Lehigh. The team finished the year ranked #10 in 2A and made it to the sweet 16 where it lost by one point to FBA. Aaron Jones (2021) made the News-Press All-area first team, Sean Shore (2020) made the 2nd team, and Dylan McDaniel (2020), Trent Guttery (2020), and Drew Tessier (2020) were honorable mention.
One thing is for sure, ECS Hoops has been put on the map for Florida High School Basketball. They will once again play a gauntlet schedule for the 2020-2021 season. The first regular season games will be at North Fort Myers High School in the 2nd annual Sunshine Showdown. The team then opens up it's home schedule with the annual in-school game. This year's game will be against Ida Baker on 12/1/20. And of course, the 4th annual "Silent Night Game" will feature a battle against the Knights of North Fort Myers.
For the 3rd season in a row, the team has been invited to participate in the Wally Keller Classic (at Charlotte HS), the New Year's Shootout (at Lehigh HS), and the City of Palms Premiere (at Canterbury). The team will face top-notch competition in each of these events. At the end of December, the team will travel to Tampa for the Sun Bash Tournament. Coach Guttery says, "The Sun Bash has quickly become one of the best tournaments in the state. This is a great honor for ECS to be invited!"
Also on the schedule, the first ever Private 8 Conference Tournament. This will be a 3-day tournament, in January, in which the 8 private schools from Lee and Collier Counties play for the Conference Championship. When asked about the Private 8 Tourney. Coach Guttery says, "What a great opportunity to get ready for play-off basketball and compete against some great schools with whom we have great rivalries."
And, for the first time since Guttery's arrival to ECS, the Sentinels will travel across town to play the Fort Myers Green Wave. When asked about this game against the school where he spent 10 years as the basketball coach, Guttery said, "I have been trying to get this game on our schedule for 3 years. I am happy we finally got it done and think it will be a fun rivalry for many years to come. It will be fun to coach again in The Wave Cave. The gym and the Fort Myers fans make for a great atmosphere for high school basketball!"
Coach Guttery is excited about the 2020-2021 schedule. "The 2020-2021 schedule is going to be so much fun! We play some great teams. We also have 13 games scheduled against the best teams in Lee County. This will make for some big crowds and great rivalry atmospheres. Seeing this schedule should motivate our returning players to get to work! We must stay humble and hungry to improve."
