Scott Guttery grew up in Southwest Florida. He graduated from Bishop Verot High school in 1997 and went on to play college basketball at Centre College in Danville, KY. Scott graduated from Centre College in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science and a major in Psychology. He moved back to Fort Myers in 2001.
Since returning, he has coached JV basketball at Dunbar (2001-2003) and Bishop Verot (2003-2004). He was the head girl’s coach at Bishop Verot for 1 season (2004-2005). Guttery was then hired to start up the basketball program at Ida Baker High School in Cape Coral, FL. He coached there from 2005-2007. Guttery then coached at Fort Myers High School from 2007-2017. In 10 seasons with the Green Wave, Guttery lead the team to a 203-89 record, 9 state play-off appearances, 6 district titles, 4 LCAC titles, 4 trips to the sweet 16 (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013), 3 trips to the elite 8 (2010, 2011, 2013) and a State Championship in 2010.
In 2009 & 2013, Guttery received the FACA district coach of the year award. In 2010, after leading the Green Wave to Lee County's first ever state basketball title, Guttery was named SFABC (SW FL Association of Basketball Coaches) and Florida's 4A coach of the year. Guttery also coached the FACA State All-Star game in 2012 & 2013. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Southwest Florida Association of Basketball Coaches. Guttery is also the Boys Basketball State Chariman for the Florida Athletic Association. He is also a member of the FHSAA coaches advisory committeer.
In July of 2017, Guttery was hired as the head coach and director of basketball operations at Evangelical Christian School. In 2019, Guttery also became the Athletic Director at ECS.
Scott has been married to his wife, Becky, for 18 years. They have two boys, Reece (14 years old) & Trae (13 year old) who both attend ECS.

Varsity Assistant Basketball Coach
George Gabourel started coaching in 1976 right out of high school and has coached multiple sports including football, baseball, softball, and basketball. In 1985 he took over the girls basketball program at Hartford High School in Vermont. Within 4 years, he was able to turn the culture of the program around. They soon would be one of the dominate programs in the state playing in the playoffs and reaching the final 4 of the Vermont state finals. Coach Gabourel was nominated coach of the year in 1989 and again in 1990 by the area coaches.
In 2000 Gabourel moved to Florida and got a coaching job at Barron Collier as the JV girls basketball coach where he coached for 14 years. He had 10 undefeated seasons in a row! He was also a varsity assistant and they won several district titles, regional titles, 4 final four appearances, and 2 state championships.
He is excited to join the ECS Program and work with Coach Guttery and looks forward to making the program one of the elite programs in the area.
Junior Varsity Basketball Coach
David Westberry grew up in SWFL and played high school basketball for Coach Guttery at Fort Myers High School. He graduated from FMHS in 2007 and during his senior year led the team to a district and LCAC championship while earning All-Area Honors.
After graduating from FMHS, David went on to continue his education and athletic career at Warner where he was a 4-year starter and led the team to the NAIA National Tournament as a senior.
After graduating from college in 2012, he started his coaching career as an assistant coach for Warner University where he was the head of player development and recruiting. He spent the last 6 years (2012-2018) working with the National Basketball Academy as a program director and trainer for the Indiana Pacers Youth Hoops Programs. David has traveled all over the world running basketball camps and training.
He will be the middle school athletic director at ECS and teach lower school PE. We are so excited to have David join our ECS Hoops family and have someone with his coaching experience working with our student/athletes.
Strength & Conditioning Coach, Team Chaplain
Sean McAfee has been working with high school students for over fifteen years, beginning with his time as a school teacher in Lebanon, TN and currently serving his twelfth year in youth ministry. His coaching experience is primarily related to baseball and wrestling, having coached both in Tennessee and Florida. Sean served as chaplain for the Fort Myers High School basketball team for six years.
Sean is the youth minister at the Gulf Coast Church of Christ, where he works with 6th-12th graders. He is quite familiar with ECS, having spoken at both the Lower and Upper School's Spiritual Emphasis weeks last year, as well as frequently speaking and volunteering throughout the school year.
Sean has been married to his wife, Angela, for seven years. They have four kids: Samantha Meyer, a graduate of ECS (21), Chase Goodwin, a current ECS junior (16), John Michael (4) and Anniston (2).
Middle School Coach A Head Coach
Garrison Free was raised in Fort Myers, Fl and played for Coach Guttery for 4 years at Fort Myers High School. He was a member of the 2010 State Championship Basketball Team. He graduated from Florida State University in December of 2016 with a degree in Sports Management. Besides winning a state title at FMHS, Garrison's claim to fame was winning the City of Palms Basketball Tournament’s 3-point Championship in 2012.
Garrison works in Golf Services in Naples and is pursuing a PGA degree. This is his second year as the ECS Middle School Head Coach. He plans on bringing his passion of the game to ECS, and hopes to be an inspiration to all of the players in the ECS basketball program.
Middle School B Head Coach
Justin grew up in Dayton, Ohio where he began coaching basketball as a varsity boys basketball assistant coach at the Miami Valley School while attending the University of Dayton. He served as a varsity assistant coach from 1998-2001. Upon graduation from the University of Dayton, he moved to Florida where he worked as a teacher and varsity boys assistant basketball coach at Pedro Menendez High School in St. Augustine Florida from 2002-2004. In 2005, Justin worked as an Assistant coach with the Cedarville University Men's Basketball team in Cedarville Ohio. While at Cedarville, the team advanced to the NAIA Final four and set a school record for wins with 28. During that time, he also worked as an assistant coach with the Dayton Jets, a professional team with the International Basketball league. In 2006, Justin worked as an assistant coach for Flagler College under Bo Clark. That following year he worked as a teacher and Head Boy's Basketball coach at Crystal River High School and then from 2008-2010 served as a teacher and Head Boy's Basketball Coach at Lake Worth Christian School, where they advanced to the State tournament each year.
After attending law school, Justin currently works as a criminal defense attorney for Collier, Lee and Charlotte Counties.
Middle School Assistant Coach
Daniel Vincent grew up in Southern Arizona. He played High School basketball and graduated from Sahuaro High in 2005. After high school Daniel was hired on with the fire department (Ironwood Hotshots) and fought forest fires for 5 years across the United States. In 2011 he joined the United States Coast Guard. Daniel volunteered for a 1 year assignment to the Kingdom of Bahrain where he found recreational leagues to compete in. Daniel is now stationed in Fort Myers and has coached local YMCA leagues.
He is currently an active duty member of the Coast Guard and plans to make it a 20 year career. Upon retirement Daniel hopes to pursue a full time coaching career. He is extremely enthusiastic about coaching and being part of such a great program!
Scott attended ECS from 1991 through 1997, and was a four-year letterman in basketball at ECS/Cypress Lake High School. Scott’s career in real estate began in 2003 and he is an appraiser, consultant, and real estate sales associate with Maxwell, Hendry & Simmons LLC. Scott is also a member of the Royal Palm Coast Board of Realtors.
Scott enjoys spending time with his wife, Emily, and children Taylor (8) and Harrison (2), is an avid golfer, and an FGCU basketball season ticket holder. This is Scott’s second year as a coach with the ECS Basketball program, and he is excited to be part of the Sentinels family once again.
